Introduction.

GCSE Religious Studies is based upon the courses offered by Edexcel. There are a variety of choices and we have selected the following as most suitable for the international nature of many of our students.  A brief outline is as follows

Year 10     Religion and Life based upon a study of Christianity. This involves a study of

Unit 1  Belief in God and discussion of the concept of evil and suffering,

Unit 2  Ethical issues concerning Life and Death, Medical ethics

Unit 3  Marriage and the family

Unit 4  Social Harmony  - Racism and Gender Issues

Year 11    A study of a World Religion other than Christianity. Students choice to study a
religion in depth from the following list.  Work is individual or small group based.

         Islam

Hinduism

Passover Seder Plate
Judaism

This means that at the end of the course students have an excellent working knowledge of at least TWO world religions and are able to discuss ethical issues with critical insight.

Students will take TWO examinations at the end of Year 11 which will cover the two different courses from Year 10 and 11.  These exams count for 80% of the final mark.

In addition to these two written examinations students will be expected to produce TWO pieces of coursework, 1 from each year of the course.  Each piece is about 1500 words long and is worth a total of 20% of the final mark.
