RELIGIOUS STUDIES at Key Stage 3

Introduction

At each Keystage (Year 7 - 9 is Keystage 3) there are TWO main objectives in the process of learning:-

1.       LEARNING ABOUT RELIGION         i)  Learning about beliefs and teachings,
ii)  Learning about practices and lifestyles
iii)  Learning about ways of expressing meaning.

2.      LEARNING FROM RELIGION           i)  Being able to ask and respond to questions of identity and experience
ii)  Being able to ask and respond to questions of meaning and purpose
iii) Being able to ask and respond to questions of values and commitments

These two objectives are the guide both for the learning content, style and the assessment of progress in Religious Studies. The objectives are defined by certain levels of attainment beginning at Level ONE (very basic and appropriate to Primary 1 students) and finishing at Level EIGHT (normally a GCSE level or higher).  Descriptions of the levels for student are available on this site please click here. To put it simply we would expect most students at the end of Year nine to be achieving Level SIX.      Experience has shown us that students develop greatly in tolerance and understanding after following this course.   The areas being assessed through these years follow the following pattern:  skills in investigation, analysis, classification, synthesis, application, evaluation, empathy and developing self-understanding.

To achieve our objectives, we aim to have as much creativity  as possible in the presentation of material and encourage students to be creative in responding.  We  use music, poetry, art, plays, stories,  debate, role play, videos that show people at worship and students discussing their beliefs.  We encourage the attainment of knowledge and the development of understanding of a variety of beliefs both sacred and secular.  To do this, students need to be presented with materials and information which will widen their experience and give them a chance to respond to new ideas.  Assessment is based on assignments given during or at the end of units of work with the style of assessment varying from topic to topic. Students are aware of the objectives of assessment and the description of levels of attainment.
