Library Searches for Religious Studies

 

With the speed of the internet and the immediate usefulness of computer web searches there seems to be a lack of emphasis upon books and libraries and yet these can be far more fruitful sometimes in obtaining detailed information.  However, a more important point is that books are published material  and, therefore have  a recognised status.  One problem with some information from the “ net” is that it may not be authoritative information.

 The purpose of these exercises is to get you used to book hunting.

 

1.      Reference Section

  1. Definitions.                  Look up Deontological, Exegesis,  Hermeneutics, Obscurantism,                                Eschatalogical, God, Myth. 
                                   Cross check each definition with a specialist reference book

  2. Encyclopeadiae            Use Britannica to find out about theories about the Beginning of the                                       Universe

  3. Quotations                   Using any dictionary of quotations find references that deal with  the                                      nature of Man

  4.   Grove Ethical series. Find a booklet that deals with Christian teaching and Euthanasia or                                     war,  or  animal experimentation

 

2.       Newspaper cuttings        

      You need to collect a minimum of  3 articles about 3 different conflicts or wars.   You should be          able to find out from the articles what the conflict is about.

3.       Magazine Articles                

  1. Newsweek, Time, New Scientist, Philosophy Now,

  2. The following subjects could be available:-

  3. Freewill and Determinism,  genetic modification,  cloning, euthanasia ,

  4. Photocopy the article and highlight all unfamiliar language for your next lesson

4.       General sections                

Research material about suicide.  Facts and figures,  poetry (Alvarez),  prose,  psychology.  In                                                    other words expand a topic using different branches of                                                          knowledge in the library.  It will throw up different views

5.      Religious Studies Section           

Select a religion or the concept of God, or belief in life after death.  Giving yourself the maximum of      one hour find as many useful references as you can.

 

6.      CD Roms                         

     Look at Exploring World Religions or Aspects of Religion.

     Copy and paste some of the information.
