Internet Searches for Religious Studies

A considerable amount of time can be wasted in using internet searches that are too wide and result in downloading far too many sites. You need to be very specific and use good search engines.  Yahoo is too general.  The following will give you some ideas.

1.                   To find out about advanced searches and boolean logic type in (http://www.northernlight.com/docs/search_help_techniques.html#natural ) This will give you plenty of information about the time saving searches.

Give at least three examples of good time saving searches. Print the information and state how long the search took from start to finish.

2.                   Using “google” (http://www.google.com) type in Just War.   Scroll down to find the Peace Pledge site or any other sites which will give you the principles of Modern Just War.

Type them or copy and paste them.

3.                   Using ‘infind”  (http://www.gogettem.com) type in Medical Ethics.  Infind is a meta search engine and highlights topics rather than sites.  Find out information on a central issue of Bio ethics from the Roman Catholic Church and at least one medical centre.

Select the main points and type them up as bullet points. Keep the information clear and brief.

4.                   Now you should be able to find some details about the following:-

Find out who they were, when they lived,  why they are important,  then quote some they  said.

Plato

Aristotle

Anselm

Thomas Aquinas

Spinoza

Immanuel Kant

David Hume

Charles Darwin

Sigmund Freud

Bertrand Russell

Try to copy and paste information but every site must be stated and acknowledged.

5.                   One of your topics will concern the origins of the universe. Find at least one good, well laid out site of information that is up to date and user friendly about the beginning of the Universe.  Contrast this with one that does not give good information or which is too technical for the average person.   Print both for comparison if you can. Time the exercise. You should find all you need to know in less than 10 minutes
