Resources

Your first an easily available material will be:

2.    Information from your SKILLS IN RELIGIOUS STUDIES text books pages 74 - 77
3.    The following websites which you will find are used regularly throughout this page if you click on the highlighted words.

http://www.ummah.org.uk/hajj/    -  This site will take you to many other sites some of them are very useful but do not struggle with sites that were obviously written for much older students.

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/hajj/   -   This site is an interactive site and contains a great deal of useful information and video footage.  You will use this site a great deal so bookmark it.

There is a large amount of information for you to discover and you will need to understand it in order to do the main assignment.

The Main Assignment:-    "A Letter to my friends"

You are to imagine that you are actually going on Hajj with your parents.   You are going to write a long letter to your friends back in Hong Kong telling them about what you are doing and how you feel about the various parts of the Hajj.  So you must use the information you find out to allow your imagination to work. Answering these questions in rough might help......

  -       What would it feel like to arrive with all those other people.
  -       What about the special clothes.  Where will you stay?
  -       What was Makkah and the Mosque like.  Were you tired after the first day of the Hajj.
  -       How did you get to Arafat and Mina, what happened there?
  -       How did you sleep. eat, drink, and cope with the dry heat of the desert?
  -       How did you feel when you finished the Hajj....why did you do it?

The letter can include maps, pictures and drawings.

It should be 700+ words and MUST be written in your own words.

Research work to help you

HAJJ is a very important pilgrimage for Muslims and is regarded as one of the FIVE PILLARS of the ISLAMIC FAITH. You need to click on this website http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/hajj/  and then click on FIVE PILLARS on the left hand side

Task : In your books make sure that you have a neat drawing of the FIVE Pillars and have explained what they mean?

Task : Look at some of the pictures of the Hajj at http://www.ummah.net/hajj/pics/index.html  and write down about thirty words which describe how you think you would feel if you were doing what is happening in the pictures.  e.g hot, dry,  thirsty, crowded, amazed.

Now have a good look at the CNN website,  it has some videos and lots of useful information.

 http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/hajj/

Try to get a plan of what actually happens in the Hajj

Perhaps these words might help you  Tawaf, Zamzam, Arafat, Mina, Muzdalifah.

OK so now you should have enough information, ideas and pictures but before you leave.....

Draw the map.  Don't print it....draw it....it will help you remember what they actually do.
