Assignment  1.

PLACES OF WORSHIP
 IN
HONG KONG

One of the important parts of Hong Kong is the fact that all the major religions of the world are represented and have places of worship around the territory. Hong Kong enjoys considerable religious freedom and at present there are no restrictions upon any religious group in the practice of their faith. major religions of the world are represented and have places of worship around the territory. Hong Kong enjoys considerable religious freedom and at present there are no restrictions upon any religious group in the practice of their faith.

1.         First of all you need a map of Hong Kong that you can cut out and stick on to a page of A3 paper.  You can find a map if you go to the Hong Kong Travel Association website

http://www.centamap.com/cent/index.htm

You can RIGHT click on this map and save it.  It will then print beautifully. For more detailed maps of specific areas go to:-

   http://www.vectormap.com/eng/english.htm

Click on the areas that will give you what you need.

2.         Find out about the nearest place of worship to your home.  This might mean that you need to go for a walk or ask people around you.  It might mean that you actually describe your own peace of worship.  The place of worship might even be in a school or some other community building.

Explain where the place is,  what religion it is, when they meet and whether they welcome visitors.  Type this up and fix it on your paper with an arrow pointing to the place on the map

3.         Find out about places of worship belonging to  western religious traditions. (churches, synagogues and mosques).  The easiest way to find this out is to look in the South China Morning Post on a Saturday when all the places of worship are advertised.  This, unfortunately,  will not tell you about the mosque. You will have to look elsewhere for that.

Cut out four adverts and find out where the places are. Fix the adverts on your paper with arrows pointing to the places on your map and explain as much as you can about the adverts and what they are about.

4.          You now need to find out about other places of worship especially some temples.   Go to:-

http://www.totallyhk.com/

click on the “This is H K”  box.   This will take you to a new page. Scroll down until you find the word “Religion”  click on this word.  This will take you to a page which has details about Hong Kong temples.   You can download this information and use it on your map.  You can click on the various places of worship to find out information in addition to your discoveries made above.

Check that you know where the following are:

Ø       Man Mo temple

Ø       Hindu Temple in Happy Valley

Ø       Sikh Temple (Khalsa Diwan) on Queen’s Road East (corner of Stubbs Road)

Ø       Reform Jewish Synagogue

Ø       St. John’s Cathedral

Ø       Kowloon Mosque.

Ø       Po Lin Monastery

Ø       Wong Tai Sin Temple

OK now  fix all the information on your A3 map page and make sure that you have found out as much as you can about the above buildings.
