The languages faculty is committed to the following aims in its teaching of languages at South Island School

·       To develop the ability and confidence to use the foreign language for practical communication

·       To offer insights into the cultures where the languages are used and to develop students' understanding of their own cultures

·       To encourage a positive and interested attitude towards foreign language learning, towards speakers of foreign languages and towards other cultures

·       To develop valuable study skills which can be applied to all subjects; attention to detailed listening, predicting vocabulary, gist reading, memorising information.

·       To provide an enjoyable and vigorous intellectual challenge for all abilities
