Here are 16 important safety points you need to follow in the textile rooms at South Island school.

  • Put your foot control pedal carefully into a comfortable position.

  • Don't switch on the power until you are ready to sew.

  • Adjust the machine to the correct settings before you begin.

  • Check the bobbin has enough thread and that the bobbin case is in correctly.

  • NEVER start to sew with thread unless you have fabric under the presser foot.

  • NEVER sew over a needle or pin.

  • NEVER allow someone else to control the foot pedal unless you have permission from the teacher.

  • NEVER distract anyone while they are sewing.

  • Keep your fingers away from the needle.

  • Report a damaged or broken machine immediately to your teacher.

  • Tie back long hair.

  • Switch the machine off when you have finished.

  • Remove the bobbin at the end of the lesson and place in teacher's box.

  • Bobbin cases must stay inside the machine at all times.

  • NEVER fiddle with the settings unnecessarily.

  • Report any accidents immediately.
