1

Introduction to 'tom'- Principles of Green Design

Identify the reasons and objectives for green design

Eco Warriors. Eco Champions and Eco-fans-Victor Papanek- Design for Disassembly, Vernacular design. Tom Dixon -Life Cycle Analysis- copper lamps from India, Artek project and bamboo furniture

3.1.1-3.1.5

6.2.1-6.2.9

2

Formulate a design brief making a brief statement that identifies the project, explanation & justification. Suggest the 'target market'

Describe a design specification and it is developed from the design brief and is concluded as a Final Product Specification (FPS).Ensure the specification is fully justified.

3.3.1-3.3.14

RA 1-3 Research

 3

Strategies for Green Design. Identify practical strategies used to encourage green strategies in design

3.3.1-3.3.14
4 Investigate structures and the basic theory to develop an understanding for designing-include static & dynamic forces and structural types

p4.5- Structures. Briefly outline Young's Modulus, Forces, Strength & Stiffness & Beams.

9.1-9.4
5 Use of sustainable materials. Identify what sustainable materials. Make suggestions for their applications and discuss in the context of Properties of Materials 4.2 p5.5 Sustainable Development  12.1-12.2
6 Research existing chairs. Collect 8 images under the categories of Joining, Moulding, Casting & Forming. Analyse/annotate them using the topic sub-heading where you can. 5.1-5.2

11.1-11.4

DA 1-3 Development

7

Brainstorm of initial thoughts- annotate ‘doodle’. Define the term brainstorming.

Generate a range of possible solutions that respond to the Design Brief. Link ideas to images and concepts derived from your research or ‘doodle’ page- creative catalysts

8

Use a range of graphical media throughout.

Sketches, 2D/3D perspective, detail drawings, dynamic drawings, card models, orthographic, exploded drawings

Annotation referring to:

Research (materials, joining, finishing)

Ergonomics (user interface, logic)

Materials choice and joining techniques

Possible manufacturing techniques

Evaluation of each design outlining strengths and weaknesses of each design. Perform tests.

Specification Checks on each design

 9

Make a scale prototype model of the final solution and use this to produce a Prodesktop drawing- design plus engineering drawing

Explain how making a model/3-D graphic can help you communicate you design ideas

Interview with intended client/users and show evidence of information and feedback/evaluation. Include photos of your discussion

10

Manufacturing

EA 1-3 Evaluation

 11

Introduction

Test the quality, performance, other functional requirements of the product against the original Specification in its intended working environment/conditions over an extended period of time

 12

Analyse your design strategies & problems throughout your process testing and reviewing against the Specification and discuss all modifications to improve your design.

13

Use clear drawings with notes to show alterations to improve the design

Describe how the product would be batch produced- what production changes would be required.
